A Children's Author's Childhood, Rebuilt as a Palace

Bülow Palais occupies a site on Königstraße where the vicarage of the Dreikönigskirche once stood, the house where Dresden-born writer Erich Kästner, author of Emil and the Detectives, grew up before the Second World War levelled the district. The Stuttgart couple Monika and Horst Bülow rebuilt a baroque-style residence on the same ground and opened it as a hotel in 2010, setting out to combine period elegance with contemporary art rather than museum-piece restraint. Fifty-eight rooms and suites, spread across three floors, sit inside Dresden's reconstructed Baroque Quarter, within walking distance of the Zwinger, the Semperoper and the Frauenkirche.

Why It Works

We chose Bülow Palais because a Relais & Châteaux address inside Dresden's historic centre is rarer than the city's postcard skyline suggests, and because the hotel earns the designation on substance rather than address alone: a kitchen built around French technique, a proper spa, and furnished suites rather than standardised rooms. Its position next to the Dreikönigskirche, on ground with a genuine literary history, gives it a story most new-build luxury hotels in the Baroque Quarter simply cannot claim.

Why This Location

Inner Neustadt puts Bülow Palais within a short walk of Dresden's reconstructed Baroque landmarks, the Zwinger Palace, the Semper Opera House and the Frauenkirche, while Dresden-Neustadt railway station is about a kilometre away. The quarter itself runs quieter than the tourist-heavy Altstadt riverbank, a residential grid of baroque facades rebuilt after the war, which makes the hotel a base for a guest who wants the city's grand sights within reach without sleeping among them.

Fifty-Eight Rooms, No Two Alike

Room categories run from compact Comfort rooms with a connecting-door option for families to two-bedroom Palais Suites of around ninety square metres overlooking Königstraße or the Rebeccabrunnen fountain, with Junior Suites tucked under the roofline behind dormer windows. Booking the Deluxe category carries a guaranteed upgrade to a Junior Suite on arrival, a small signal of how the hotel treats its stated categories as a starting point rather than a ceiling. The furnishing throughout favours the period pieces the Bülow family collected over a generic boutique palette, with contemporary art set deliberately against them.

A French Kitchen in a Baroque Dining Room

Brasserie Caroussel Nouvelle carries the hotel's restaurant service, French-inflected cooking served under the same period detailing as the rest of the house, while breakfast moves into a light-filled winter garden built specifically for the morning meal rather than repurposed from the dinner room. A cigar lounge extends the evening further, a detail that signals the hotel's older-school, European grand-hotel instincts rather than a design-hotel minimalism.

Before You Book

Bülow Palais is a formal, traditional luxury hotel rather than a boutique design address, and its appeal leans on heritage detail and genuine quiet over contemporary flash, worth knowing for a guest expecting a minimalist aesthetic. The hotel sits inside Inner Neustadt rather than directly on the Elbe riverbank, so guests who specifically want river views should confirm the outlook of their room category before booking.
