A Berlin Prison Reborn as a Design Sanctuary

Behind a plain stucco façade on a quiet Charlottenburg side street, Wilmina occupies a courthouse and women's prison built in 1896, a building that held resistance fighters during the Second World War and sat derelict for decades afterward. Architects Almut Grüntuch-Ernst and Armand Grüntuch, who run Grüntuch Ernst Architekten, chose to keep the weight of that history rather than erase it: one cell survives untouched as a memorial, and the heavy doors that once locked prisoners in now open onto forty-four guest rooms. A courtyard once sealed under asphalt is planted and green again, and a glass-roofed atrium, cut through a removed floor slab, pulls daylight down into a lobby that still feels, deliberately, like a held breath.

Why It Works

We chose Wilmina because very few hotels let a building's past speak this plainly and still feel calm rather than solemn. The original window bars remain in several rooms, merged from two or three cells, yet the palette inside is off-white and botanical, and the result reads as restraint, not theatre. Lovis, the restaurant built into the former prison yard, and Amtsalon, the small art space installed in the old courthouse, give the hotel a cultural pulse beyond its rooms. For a design-literate traveller who wants Berlin's weight and its lightness in the same stay, that combination is rare enough to be worth the detour.

Why This Location

Charlottenburg trades Mitte's crowds for a residential calm that still has somewhere to walk to. Charlottenburg S-Bahn station is seven minutes on foot, and Kantstrasse's restaurants and Savignyplatz's galleries sit within the same radius. The hotel lends bicycles for the ten-minute ride to Charlottenburg Palace, and central landmarks, the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, are roughly half an hour away by train. It suits a traveller who wants to cycle to a palace in the morning and still be minutes from a packed restaurant list by evening, without feeling like a tourist thoroughfare.

Rooms Carved From Cells

The six room categories trace the building's old geometry rather than hide it: Cosy rooms, at eleven square metres, sit on a raised sleeping platform within a single former cell, while Classic rooms merge two cells for a kingsize bed and can combine with a neighbouring Cosy room for families. Garden View rooms face the planted courtyards, and the fifth-floor Suites and Garden Suite, the latter a full apartment with its own staircase to a private garden, sit under floor-to-ceiling windows the renovation lowered to open the view the original bars once blocked. Every room keeps Cocomat beds, rain showers and Frama toiletries, a quiet, consistent standard under rooms that otherwise vary considerably in scale and mood.

Lovis, and the Life Beyond the Kitchen

Lovis occupies the former prison lock yard, its dining room built from Austrian hardwood and lit through tall windows, with a kitchen that leans on seasonal, regional produce for a modern German menu carrying a French accent; the adjoining bar, decorated with Japanese-ink-inspired detailing, pours cocktails into the night. Breakfast is served in the library as a curated spread rather than a buffet, homemade preserves, regional cheeses, smoked trout, and Lotta, the daytime café, and Wilmina Brot, the in-house bakery, carry the same kitchen through the rest of the day. It is a hotel that feeds its guests on the building's own terms, not a chain's.

Before You Book

The rooftop pool and its garden are adults-only, so travelling families are better served by the neighbouring Wilmina Apartments, which share the same address and courtyard. Berlin Brandenburg Airport sits around 28 kilometres out, closer to forty minutes by taxi than the S-Bahn used for the city centre. And because several rooms keep their original window placement and bars as a deliberate choice, a guest wanting a conventional view should ask at booking which category faces the courtyard rather than the street.
